| Amit Biswas — Age: 14, Grade: 8Amit is a cheeky and fun loving student. He lives with his parents and younger sister in a single roomed bamboo house near the railway tracks. His father drives a cycle rickshaw for about USD$2 a day. Before Amit was enrolled in the Golden Avatar School he earned money selling marijuana. |
| Amit Ravi Das — Age: 14, Grade: 8Amit lives alone with his mother who supports him by sweeping drains, which in the region are nothing more than open sewers. He appeared to exhibit some behavioral abnormalities for which he was forced to leave his studies. At our school he receives the warmth and support he needs and interacts much more confidently with others. |
| Anay Saha — Age: 10, Grade: 5Anay is a well behaved student and is diligent in his studies. He lives in a simple mud house with his grandmother who earns their living as cooking in people’s homes. Because of the small wages his grandmother earns she could not afford to send him to school. |
| Barnali Kundu — Age: 10, Grade: 5Barnali attends our school along with her sister Susmita. Their father supports the family of six on a rickshaw drivers wage (about USD$2 daily). She and her sister were withdrawn from school after their mother fell ill. Now they are able to continue their studies without expense at our school. |
| Jhili Biswas — Age: 15, Grade: 9Jhili comes from a destitute background. She lives in a simple dwelling with both her parents and brother. Her father works in he local textile industry earning less than USD$2 a day. She was unable to continue her schooling after the seventh grade when her father fell ill, and ceasing work for a period could not afford to pay her school fees. |
| Kajuli Biswas — Age: 9, Grade: 5Kajuli lives in a simple dwelling along with her parents, her poorly grandfather, brother and sister. Her father cycles a rickshaw for a living, the earning he makes by which are the only income for the whole family. The three children attend the GATEi school together after their father simple couldn’t afford to put them all through school. Now their education is free and they have no such concerns. Kaujli is a very bright and capable student and at times very naughty. |
| Kalyanmoy Saha — Age: 15, Grade: 7Kalyanmoy has come from a very difficult background. Having spent a year in juvenile prison after being caught out as a drug runner for the local gang, he is now determined to make a change in his life. Kalyan attends the GATEi school along with his younger brother. He is very keen in yoga (which is taught as part of the P.E. program at the school) and always helpful with odd jobs around the school. |
| Laxmirani — Age: 11, Grade: 5Laxmirani lives in a simple dwelling along with her parents, her poorly grandfather, brother and sister. Her father cycles a rickshaw for a living, the earning he makes by which are the only income for the whole family. Laxmirani is a very quiet and responsible student, and for this reason often takes the role of class monitor. |
| Limpa Das — Age: 12, Grade: 7Limpa lives in a small single room house with her mother and sister. Her mother provides for the family making bags which sell for about 4INR (25 US sents) each. She usually manages to make between ten and twenty bags a day. Unable to afford an education in the public school system, Limpa and her sister attend the GATEi school without the anxiety of having to afford books and stationary, nor pay any school fees. |
| Madhumita Majhi — Age: 14, Grade: 9Madhumita lives with her mother, grandmother and younger brother in a small two roomed bamboo house with a tin roof. Her grandmother is an orderly at a hospital some distance away and her mother, physically disabled, makes a very small earning from home by packing and reselling snacks which she buys wholesale. Madhumita is a very and helpful student, always willing to help out around the school. |
| Mangal Kundu — Age: 11, Grade: 6Mangal is an extremely bright and too often mischievous student. Coming from a family afflicted by alcoholism, His mother and elder brother support the family, which includes his grandmother, working in a bag factory for a meager wage. For this reason Mangal had not been able to continue his studies. Now that he attends the free school run by GATEi he is flourishing and making grades among the highest in the region. |
| Mousami Saha — Age: 13, Grade: 7Mousami lives in a small dwelling by the train line with her grandmother, who came as a refugee form Bangladesh during the war for independence in ’71. Her grandmother earns a small wage as a cook in peoples homes – hardly enough to afford to send Mousumi to public school. Mousumi’s grandmother is more concerned the she engage in domestic affairs rather than schooling, as such Mousumi’s attendance in minimal. It is rather questionable weather she will continue her studies. |
| Mousumi Saha — Age: 11, Grade: 6Mousumi like most of the students at the school come from a family of refugees who have settled by the train line. She lives with her father, a cancer patient, her mother and younger brother. Her mother supports the family working at a tea and snack stall. Her mother contacted the school after her father came down with cancer and could no longer work. Now the GATEi school offers her an opportunity to continue her studies. |
| Nabanita Das — Age: 14, Grade: 9Nabanita lives in a three-room dwelling along with her two grandparents, mother, father, sister and brother. Her mother works as a weaver and her father owns a mobile ‘six rupee’ store. Her parents low income is not sufficient to support the family of seven as well as put all three children through school. Now with the opportunity provided by GATEi, Nabanitia is making excellent progress in her studies with exam results which put her among the highest ranking students in the region. |
| Papia Debnath — Age: 14, Grade: 8Papia lives in a single room earthen dwelling with her parents and younger sister. Her father supports the entire family on the small earning he makes cycling a rickshaw (less than USD$3 a day). Unable to continue at public school due to the expense, she now continues to free of charge at the GATEi school. |
| Papia Dhara — Age: 15, Grade: 9Papia is part of a family of six, supported by her father who is a carpenter. Papia is the only one of her siblings who studies – her elder brother and sister both left their studies early because the family could not afford the educate them. Her elder brother currently assists their father as an apprentice. |
| Papia Ghosh — Age: 15, Grade: 9Papia lives in a small house with her mother who supports them working in a small clothing factory. As is the case with many, her mother could not afford the expenses of sending her to public school. Now she very uch enjoys her schooling at the GATEi school, especially the dance program the school provides. |
| Papia Saha — Age: 13, Grade: 7Papia’s father supports their family of six as a fisherman. The profit he makes selling his catch is not enough to put all of his four children through school. Now that Papia attends the GATEi school she enjoys a curriculum even broader than that of the government schools, which includes dance and art. |
| Payal Nandi — Age: 14, Grade: 9Payal lives with her mother and father. Her father sells vegetables from a mobile cart and mother works from home sewing buttons and hooks on various articles. When her father injured himself and was not able to work for some time her mother contacted the GATEi school so that she could continue her education, which the family could not have otherwise have afforded. |
| Purnima Sarkar — Age: 13, Grade: 7Purnima lives with her mother in a small single roomed earthen dwelling near the train line. Her mother works as a house maid for a minimal wage, which is not sufficient to cover the expenses of Purnima’s education. Now Purnima attends the GATEi school without such concerns. She enjoys crafts and is always very helpful with odd jobs around the school. |
| Rahul Biswas — Age: 15, Grade: 9Rahul lives in a simple dwelling along with her parents, his poorly grandfather and two sisters. Her father cycles a rickshaw for a living, the earning he makes by which are the only income for the whole family. Rahul is a very diligent and hardworking student who enjoys writing and sharing poetry with his teachers and classmates. |
| Rajendra Ravi Das — Age: 28, Grade: 9Rajendra is one of the GATEi schools mature age students. Unable to continue his studies when his father passed away and his mother was unable to continue sending him to school. Now he is inspired to broaden his opportunities by furthering his education with the help of GATEi. |
